Environmental Tobacco Smoke Secondhand smoke and passive smoking Sidestream smoke and Mainstream smoke Contains over 4000 chemicals, 43 known carcinogens, and 200 poisons National Cancer Institute, 1999 ETS is more commonly known as secondhand smoke or passive smoke. It is made up of sidestream smoke and mainstream smoke. Sidestream smoke is the smoke which comes from the cigarette itself. Mainstream smoke is what a smoker exhales into the environment. These two forms of smoke contain over 4000 chemicals, 43 carcinogens-the stuff that causes cancer and over 200 poisons. Can somebody name a poison???? Formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, carbon monoxide ETS is more commonly known as secondhand smoke or passive smoke. It is made up of sidestream smoke and mainstream smoke. 5. National Lets start off with some national facts. We will compare these facts with Big Tobacco facts.Lets start off with some national facts. We will compare these facts with Big Tobacco facts.

    6. National 88% percent of all non-smokers in the United States are exposed to secondhand smoke. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Exposure to Secondhand Smoke Widespread, Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 275, No. 16, April 23, 1996 If there are 67 people in this room that means that 54 of you are exposed. If there are 67 people in this room that means that 54 of you are exposed.

    7. National Simple separation of smokers and non-smokers within the same airspace does not eliminate exposure of non-smokers to secondhand smoke. Surgeon General Report, 1986 As you can tell when you walked in this room todaythe smoking section at a restaurant is like a peeing section in the pool!!As you can tell when you walked in this room todaythe smoking section at a restaurant is like a peeing section in the pool!!

    8. National Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke for just 30 minutes experience hardening of the arteries. Journal of the American Medical Association, 2001 Even though you arent smoking you experience a physiological response from breathing in someone elses smoke.Even though you arent smoking you experience a physiological response from breathing in someone elses smoke.

    9. National Secondhand smoke is the 3rd leading cause of preventable death in the US Killing 53,000 non-smokers every year National Cancer Institute, 1999 That is almost 150 non-smokers every day!!That is almost 150 non-smokers every day!!

    10. National For every 8 smokers the tobacco industry kills, it takes one non-smoker with them. Glantz, Stan and Parmley, W., "Passive Smoking and Heart Disease: Epidemiology, Physiology, and Biochemistry," Circulation 1991 According to Glantz and Parmley If you are around smokers, you could be one of those killed by Big Tobacco. Roughly, eight of you will die of smoking related illness without ever picking up a cigaretteAccording to Glantz and Parmley If you are around smokers, you could be one of those killed by Big Tobacco. Roughly, eight of you will die of smoking related illness without ever picking up a cigarette

    11. National Secondhand smoke contributes to 6,200 preventable childhood deaths a year. Tobacco and Children; An Economic Evaluation of the Medical Effects of Parental Smoking, Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, 1997 Children really suffer from secondhand smoke. They suffer from illnesses like asthma, SIDS, increased colds and allergies. They suffer from ear infections, bronchitis and low birth weight too. Research has also shown a decreased learning ability of children.Children really suffer from secondhand smoke. They suffer from illnesses like asthma, SIDS, increased colds and allergies. 12. National Tobacco companies have paid scientists to write letters to newspapers and specialist journals discrediting research showing a link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer. Associated Press, Tobacco Industry Paid Scientists, 4 August 1998 But the truth is out there With our help we can put an end to the misinformation campaignBut the truth is out there With our help we can put an end to the misinformation campaign

    13. National Waiters and waitresses have nearly four times the rate of lung cancer and twice the rate of heart disease as any other profession. Journal of the American Medical Association, 1993 According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, if you work in the restaurant business you are four times more likely to get lung cancer.According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, if you work in the restaurant business you are four times more likely to get lung cancer.

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1993 Who works in a restaurant? Of those who do, how many do not smoke? Well, think again.Who works in a restaurant? Of those who do, how many do not smoke? Well, think again.

    15. National The tobacco industry argues that eating establishments and other businesses where people gather will suffer enormous financial losses from smoking bans. Yet recent research in the US has found these claims to be greatly exaggerated. Stanton Glantz and L.R. Smith, The Effect of Ordinances Requiring Smoke-Free Restaurants and Bars on Revenues: A Follow-Up, American Journal of Public Health, Vol. 87 No. 10, October 1997 Read this slide Basically Big Tobacco argues that if a business is smoke-free they will lose money. Will it cost more money to be smoke-free or have a separate ventilation system, smoking section signs, burns in the chairs? Remember, the truth is out there.Read this slide Basically Big Tobacco argues that if a business is smoke-free they will lose money. Morton Mintz, The Building Doctor, Washington Post Magazine, 24 March 1996; The Tobacco Institute, Inc. Minutes of Meeting of the Executive Committee, December 10, 1987 Big tobacco has secretly funded research. Can you believe that!!! They spend a lot of money to hide the fact that secondhand smoke kills. Even the name ETS is a cover-up, created to sound less harmful than secondhand smoke.
