  2. Background • Born December 10th, 1805 • Died May 24th, 1879 • Sold Lemonade and Candy as a child • Perused a career as a writer as an adult.

  3. Career as a Reformer • He was the editor of an abolitionist paper called The Liberator. • In the first issue he called for the “immediate and uncompensated emancipation of the slaves.”

  4. Career cont. • Garrison founded the New England Anti- Slavery Society. • Helped in the anti-slavery movement in the United Kingdom • He was also a very stronger supporter of women’s rights • His beliefs spilt the Anti-Slavery Society into rival halves.

  5. After the Abolition • Worked more in the women’s suffrage movement, as well as continuing to fight so that African- American’s get complete civil equality rights. • Ended the run of The Liberator and resigned as president of the American Anti-Slavery Society.

  6. Legacy • Garrison was part of the leading charge to end slavery in the United States. • His actions helped shaped things like the Emancipation Proclamation • Still today, he is remembered for his headstrong personality and his commitment.
