  2. Who Was He? • Born on December, 12, 1805 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. • He grew up in a poor, piously Baptist family. • His father abandoned the family in 1808 after becoming unemployed. • His mother died in 1823. • Worked as a writer for small town newspapers. • Died on May, 24, 1879 from kidney disease.

  3. His 20’s • He became an Abolitionist at the age of 25. • He began to write a newspaper called “The Liberator”, in which he talked about his opposition of slavery. He carried the newspaper on for decades until slavery was abolished.

  4. Abolitionism • The goal of the movement was to end slavery in the United States. • The movement became popular in the early 1800s. • Abolitionism successfully reached its goal. This happened because most of the people in the North were abolitionists, while most of the people in the South were not. President Abraham Lincoln was also an abolitionist. This led to the Civil War, where the North won and ended slavery.

  5. Why Is He Important? • What he did for Abolitionism: He wrote anti-slavery propaganda in his newspaper for decades. Also, unlike every other abolitionist, he pushed for the instant end of slavery, while the other abolitionists pushed for the gradual end of slavery. • What he is famous for: He wrote an anti-slavery newspaper for decades and founded the American Anti-Slavery Society.

  6. Why Is He Important? (Continued) • His work had a strong influence on the works of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and Lucy Stone. • Founded the New-England Anti-Slavery Society in 1832. • Co-Founded the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833.

  7. Quotes • “Our country is the world-our countrymen are mankind.” • “I am in earnest - I will not equivocate - I will not excuse - I will not retreat a single inch - and I will be heard!”
