  3. Who cares about packaging? • General public little understanding • For some time environmental aspects came into focus • Today supply chain effectiveness and efficiency with cost attention is in focus GJO Sep 2005

  4. Packaging is not only a box or a bag Packaging is ”A coordinated system of preparing goods for safe, efficient and cost-effective transport, distribution, retailing, consumption and recovery, reuse or disposal combined with maximizing value, sales and hence profit.” GJO Sep 2005

Packaging materials should be on the move …… • New material concepts must be developed • Paper packaging industry needs • to understand what future markets look for when it comes to packaging material and design • to go for own R&D in cooperation with universities to innovatively develop fibre based material properties • to strive for time monopoly – to be ahead of the competing materials GJO Sep 2005

  8. Be sure to make use of the universities • Industry sectors are expected be a driving force in technical university research • Universities have an obligation to transfer their know-how to the society at large (The cooperation besides research and education) GJO Sep 2005

Challenges for packaging industry and research • Develop tools to demonstrate how to utilise packaging in product development • Get to understand the supply chains serving different industries and organisations in detail, analyse the consequences of new supply structures and changes that influence packaging GJO Sep 2005

  10. Challenges for paper industry research In addition to cooperation with the packaging industry • Develop its own research to pay more attention to the values possible to develop through new fibre based products and services • Take advantage of scientific know-how and develop the packaging materials to be ahead of competition GJO Sep 2005
