Welcome to 5th grade! This document outlines our schedule, curriculum, and expectations for students and parents. Students will experience engaging subjects like Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Math with hands-on projects and interactive learning. SOCIAL STUDIES • Started the year with a focus on U.S. geography. • Focus on U.S. history through the Civil War. • We will be beginning a State Report next week. The process will be very similar to what was done on the 4th grade California history reports. The final product will be a PowerPoint presentation and report to the class. We will also do an additional research project near the end of the year. • D.C. trip April 3rd -9th; 1st EFS meeting tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, October 23rd at 7:00 pm (parents only). 2nd meeting TBD
READING • Focus is on continued skill development, especially fluency and comprehension • Will use short stories, novels, poetry and non-fiction sources; Great Books later in the year • Book report guidelines coming soon. • Read to your kids!

iPADS • Each 5th grade student has been assigned an iPad to use at school. • Take tests in some subject areas, perform research on the internet and complete various assignments. • Student email account • 15 iPAD rules
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT • Typically in April • Kathy Larson • Registered nurse and family life educator • Develops and teaches the curriculum • Covers physical and emotional changes during puberty • Boys and girls separated for some discussions

LUNCHES • Microwave • Keep time to about one minute • Limit microwave lunches to 2 per week • Make sure students have everything they need to prepare and eat it. • Utensils, plate, microwavable containers if needed (these items should be reusable) • Choice Lunch
