East European Data Archive Network EDAN was founded at the UNESCO workshop “Social Science Data Archives in Eastern Europe” in 2002 • Informal network designed to unite data archives which are at an early stage of their existence and share common problems • Data Archives from Hungary, Estonia, Slovenia, Latvia, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia Bulgaria, Poland • Data Archive Initiatives in Lithuania, Serbia, Ukraine IASSIST Edinburgh, 2005: Session “Transforming National Data Services”

EDAN: Aims • Make sure that the Eastern European data archives will catch up with the advanced western data archives • Coordinate efforts for setting up new archives • Close co-operation with IFDO and CESSDA EDAN Coordinator: GESIS Service Agency Eastern Europe/Central Archive IASSIST Edinburgh, 2005: Session “Transforming National Data Services”

Prospects (2) New and small data archives need: • Encouragement and aid of CESSDA (general guidance, advanced seminars etc.) • and • Assistance and support of a group (network) which shares the problems of the beginners: lack of accumulated resources, expertise and personnel, no participation in previous CESSDA projects.   16. Russian Sociological Data Archive (RSDA)http://sofist.socpol.ru/ • Number of RSDA customers doubled during 2004 • In 2003 almost 70% of inquiries came from Moscow; in 2004 more than 50% inquiries came from other regions of Russia. There are 20 regional universities among our new customers
