  1. 9-1 vocab vertebrate: animal with a backbone endoskeleton : skeleton inside the body invertebrate: animal without a backbone exoskeleton: skeleton on the outside of the body

  2. Lesson Summary • Vertebrates are animals with backbones. All vertebrates have endoskeletons. • Invertebrates are animals without backbones. • Some invertebrates are soft-bodied; others have an exoskeleton. • More than 95 percent of all animals are invertebrates.

  3. INVERTEBRATES • NO backbone. • most animals

  4. Vertebrate – has a backbone Invertebrate – no backbone (simpler animals) Basics!

  5. Endoskeleton – internal skeleton Exoskeleton – external skeleton SKELETONS

  6. There are two types of body plan symmetry. • bilateral symmetry: body divides equally along one plane • radial symmetry: body arranged in circle around a central axis radial symmetry -body parts arranged in a circle around a central axis.

  7. bilateral symmetry: body divides equally along one plane • There are two types of body plan symmetry. bilateral = mirror-images

  8. Porifera (sponges) Cnidarians Platyhelminthes (flatworms) Nematodes (roundworms) Annelids (segmented worms) Mollusks Echinoderms Arthropods Arachnids Invertebrates

  9. Sponges filter feed. Called “poriferans” because bodies are made out of pores(feed through them). Reproduction – sexual or asexual (regeneration) STRUCTURE Collar cells –have collar of cytoplasm around the flagella, help maintain flow of water through body Porifera

  10. Spicules– hard, needle-like support structures that support their bodies. Amoebocyte – cells carry food around and help the sponges reproduce Porifera do not any true tissues or organs
