  3. Plot (definition) • Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

  4. 1. Exposition • This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting (time and place) of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem). • The exposition ends with something called the inciting moment. The inciting moment is the one event in the story without which there would be no story. It sets the rest of the story in motion.

  5. 2. Rising Action • This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs as events unfold.

  6. 4 Types of Conflicts • Man vs. self a character is struggling within himself emotionally or mentally • Man vs. man a character is struggling with someone else • Man vs. nature a character is struggling with his outside environment • Man vs. society a character is struggling with groups of people, organizations, etc.

  7. 3. Climax • This is the turning point of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.

  8. 4. Falling Action • All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

  9. 5. Resolution • The story comes to a reasonable ending.

  10. Putting It All Together 1. Exposition 2. Rising Action 3. Climax 4. Falling Action 5. Resolution Beginning of Story Middle of Story End of Story

  11. Theme • A theme is a lesson, a meaning, a main message about life or human nature that the author wants to communicate through the story. • In other words. . . . . . . . . Theme is what the story teaches readers. It’s usually a universal truth. . . .meaning it can be applied to anyone anywhere.

  12. Identifying Themes • Themes are not explicit (state clearly) • Themes are implied (you have to figure it out) • Themes are bigger than the story Small world of the story BIG WORLD OF THE THEME APPLIES TO THE “REAL WORLD”

  13. Example Themes • Don’t judge people based on the surface. • Surviving hardships bring personal growth. • Always consider good advice.
