Symbols- what do they mean?. Signs, signs, everywhere there’s signs…. Symbols. A symbol is anything that represents something else . However, for the symbol to be effective , members of a society must agree on its meaning. Can be gestures, physical objects, words or events.

Symbols • A symbol is anything that represents something else. • However, for the symbol to be effective, members of a society must agree on its meaning. • Can be gestures, physical objects, words or events. • Interactionists focus on how symbols are used during interactions. • This is known as symbolic interaction.

  8. Design Your Own • Write out a list of 5-10 words/objects that you feel are representative of you. From this list, choose a few to mold into a symbol of you. • You are creating a symbol that represents you. The symbol should have meaning and not be confused with other popular symbols. • On the back of your symbol, you need to write a one paragraph (4-6 sentences) explanation of how the different components represent you. • KEEP IT APPROPRIATE!!! Remember, it might elicit a few laughs now, but no one will be laughing when you stay after school…
