  1. Welding symbols Aims and objectives The learner will understand the layout and use of welding symbols. The learner will be able to identify weld symbols. The learner will be able to correctly link symbols to weld procedures.

Basics of the welding symbols • Arrow line – This line indicates were the weld needs to take place • Symbol – There are different symbols for each type weld joint, this area indicates the weld to be used • Reference line – This line is were all the information is set out to complete the weld. • The dashed line under the reference line indicates which side is the far side.

  4. Complementary symbols These symbols indicate the weld profile required and the side it is needed on. They are placed above the weld symbol.

  5. Supplementary Elements The supplementary indications are placed either at the joint between the arrow line and the reference line or at the end of the reference line. • Site weld – the weld is to be left till the work piece is in place. • Weld all around – This symbol is used indicate that the weld symbol is to be done at all point of the piece. • Weld process indent – this show what weld procedure is to be used.
