  2. Speed • Sled dogs have a very good quality • They are able to go extremely fast • They can go 20 mph for 25 miles • Dog sledging is a popular sport in Canada and Alaska • A pack of 8 to 14 dogs are in one team

Sled Dog Breeds • Greenland dogs are one of the most popular breeds • Alaskan Malamute were originally bred for sledding • Labrador Husky was a strong, fast sled dog with high stamina •   Siberian Huskies were sled dogs but are now mainly family pets • Tamaskan dogs were bred to look like wolves

  4. The History • They have been used for hunting for hundreds of years • Have been used as far back as the 10th Century •  The Royal Canadian Mounted Police use sled dogs • The leader dog is the most important • The lead dog will often become part of the family household

The Iditarod sled dog race • the race covers 1,049 miles • the wind chill during the race can get to -100 Fahrenheit • runs through places in Alaska that are sparsely populated places • the record time was 8 days, 19 hours, 49 minutes and 36 seconds • teams often run through blizzards • the dogs can be consistently running at 12 miles an hour for 16 hours at a time    

  6. Alaskan Husky • a good Alaskan Husky can sell for $10,000 • is a category of dog not a breed • record speeds can be up to 19 mph • most have pointed ears and tails that curve over their backs
