  1. Corporate Optical Backbone Networks Objectives and Concepts • COBNET's goal is to establish concepts and technologies for the next generation of Corporate Backbone Networks • COBNET is applying evolvingoptical multichannel technologies • wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) • optical space division multiplexing (SDM) • COBNET is pursueing the concept ofAdd/Drop Rings Concepts

  2. The Customer Premises Network Backbone • builds on Optical SDM Add/Drop Rings for short CPN distances or inside buildings • and on WDM Add/Drop Rings for larger CPN distances or for private MANs Add/Drop Rings

  3. The SDM Ring • combines 12 space channels on a SM fibre ribbon • operates at 1300 nm Add/Drop Rings

  4. The WDM Ring • combines 12 wavelengths on one SM fibre • operates around 1550 nm • with 1.6 nm channel spacing Add/Drop Rings

  5. Norwich Ipswich Cambridge London The Trial Network • A field trial in East England verifies concepts and technologies. • CPN backbones are established at two partner sites. BT Labs GEC Marconi Labs Trial Network

  6. Norwich Ipswich Cambridge BT Labs LEANet GEC Marconi Labs London The Trial Network • Wide-area CPN interconnection is provided across fibres of BT'sLondon East Anglian Network Trial Network

  7. Norwich Ipswich Cambridge BT Labs GEC Marconi Labs London The Trial Network • allowing clear-channel WDM connectivity across 180 km Trial Network

  8. Norwich Ipswich Cambridge BT Labs GEC Marconi Labs London The Trial Network A closer look at the nodes Trial Network

  9. The Trial Nodes • Wavelength or space channels are added/dropped in simple, low-cost Optical Add/Drop Nodes • all other channels are bypassed optically Nodes

  10. The Trial Nodes • Wavelength and/or space channelsare interchanged in a hybrid WDM/SDM Cross-Connect Node Nodes

  11. The Trial Nodes • Alternatively, channels may beswitched to the WDM WAN via aPublic Network Interface Unit Nodes

  12. The Components • WDM Lasers Economy is supported by the development of specific technological components ... Components

  13. The Components • SDM Laser Arrays Components

  14. The Components • Single-channel Receivers Components

  15. The Components • Receiver Arrays Components

  16. The Components • Clear-channel Retiming Chips Components

  17. The Components • Planar WDM (De)Multiplexers Components

  18. The Components • Tunable, planar WDM Add/Drop Muxes Components

  19. Option 2:MonostableThermo-opticalDigital Switch Option 1:Bistable MicromechanicalFibre Switch The Components • Optical Switches and Switch Arraysfor SDM protection switching Components
