  1. Andrew Potter 6th Period The OutsidersS.E. Hinton1967Realistic Fiction

  2. Setting • The setting in the book, The Outsiders, takes place on the streets of New York in the 1960’s. • The setting is important to the story because it gives us a glimpse into what life was like in the 1960’s. • The book would be different if the story was in a different place and time period; for you wouldn’t understand why they are talking like they were and doing things like drinking alcohol and smoking.

  3. Characters

  4. Conflict • The main conflict in the book, The Outsiders, is when Johnny a greaser kills Bob a Soc.(Man vs. Society)

  5. Summary of Plot Ponyboy is coming home from the movies and gets jumped by the Socs. The next night they come back and met Cherry and Marcia and afterwards walked them home. But Bob and Randy think they were trying to steal there girlfriends. So later that night when Ponyboy arrived home, Darry got mad and slapped him. At that point, Ponyboy ran away and then meets up with Johnny and they then go to the park and get jumped by the Socs. Then Ponyboy almost drowns but Johnny stabs Bob and kills him. Then they go to see Dally and Dally gives them a loaded gun with money and they run away to the abandon church. Then the church burns on fire and Johnny and Dally gets hurt while trying to save some kids and then Ponyboy faints. They go to the hospital and Johnny dies there. Then Dally runs out of the hospital and robs a store and the police shoot him when he points a gun at them. Then when he goes back to school everyone says he is a hero for saving those kids. Then he also was failing English so he wrote a paper about his recent events. When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie theater, I had only two things on my mind Paul Newman and a ride home.

  6. Theme • Bridging the gap between the rich and the poor. • Text Evidence 1: Five Socs jumped out of the car and pined me down. pg.5 • Text Evidence 2: Five Socs came from the blue mustang and put my head in the fountain and started to drowned me. pg.56 • Text Evidence 3: The soc that I was fighting fell down and rolled over. pg.144

  7. Point of View • The point of view of this book is in first person. • They used the first person point of view because they wanted to show what the main character was experiencing throughout the book.

  8. Symbolism • The picture of the Aggie playing and Longhorn player is showings a rivalry just as in the book, The Outsiders, because there was a rivalry between the Socs and Greasers.

  9. Recommendation • I would recommend this book because it has a lot of action in it and never gets boring like some books you might have read. • I would recommend this book because it is filled with suspense and intrigue and caused me to think a lot about why I do things.
