Background Object 2 2000- 2006 ERDF community based initiatives to tackle deprivation in urban areas 2005 / 06 – Joint project between West Lothian Council and Voluntary Action West Lothian (VAWL) Aim – to establish Community Development Trusts in four communities in West Lothian – Stoneyburn, Fauldhouse, Whitburn and Armadale

  3. 1 FTE member of staff employed by VAWL Community Councils, community groups and local organisations were consulted In Fauldhouse: a community newsletter was produced and distributed throughout the village Information events were held to allow residents to find out about Community Development Trusts Community Development Trust Information Event Increase understanding of CDTs Identify those who are interested in CDTs

Following the event VAWL and then subsequently WLC worked alongside representatives to: Produce a constitution for the Trust Assist with registering the Trust with OSCR Roles and responsibilities of directors Establishing appropriate banking mechanisms for the Trust Fauldhouse Community Development Trust established in December 2006

  5. WLC and FHCDT Good working relationship created Established a gateway to the Council One officer built a relationship with the trust Provided the inroads into the Council for support Staff support, time, knowledge and expertise Interviewing of staff Assistance securing funding Specialist support provided i.e. Business gateway,

  6. ‘plugging the gap’ in support Financial support Small grants Support accessing funding Assistance in project development Identification of issues Preparing of tender documents

  7. Why ? Locality Planning aims: Employablity Health Development Challenges Community to play an active role in regeneration Encourage civic participation

  8. Lessons learnt The Fauldhouse CDT model can be replicated elsewhere It does takes a number of years to develop Some outputs come long after the initial impute It can at times be challenging But……. rewards are worth the challenges
