  2. Do Now… • If fish were to live on land, what adaptations would they need to survive?

  3. Do Now… • Complete another mealworm observation. Work on lab questions and draw a picture if possible.

  4. Objectives Students will… • Describe how amphibians have adapted to live in water and on land • Identify the adaptations that allow reptiles to live on land

  5. Amphibians • Definition: animals that spend part of their lives in water and part on land • Origin of the word “amphibian”- from the Greek word amphibious which means “double life” • Examples: Frogs, Toads, Salamanders

  6. Amphibian Adaptations (ectotherms) Hibernation • Cold climates • Period of inactivity • Bury themselves in mud or leaves Estivation • Hot, dry climates • Period of inactivity • Burrow underground

  7. Amphibian Characteristics • Have endoskeletons • Young have gills, adults have lungs • Have 3 chambered hearts • Adults exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide through skin • Have ear drums

  14. Objectives • Students will • Create a foldable to learn model the metamorphosis of an amphibian

  15. Amphibian Metamorphosis (Frogs) • Create a foldable according to teacher instructions • 1) Eggs- are laid by adult amphibian in the water • 2) Young Larva-are dependent on water. They have no legs and breathe through gills. • 3)Older Larva- body structures are developed that are necessary for life on land including legs and lungs. • 4) Adult- have lungs, legs, breathe through skin and can reproduce. They require water for external reproduction.
