I researched the organization Anishinabek News, which is a newspaper produced by the Communications Unit of the Union of Ontario Indians out of its central office in North Bay. My purpose for researching Anishinabek News was to find out information on the organization as I was unaware of this organization before I began my research. Throughout my research, I had the opportunity to interview Maurice Switzer, who is the editor of the newspaper and communications director at the Union of Ontario Indians.
Anishinabek News: Background Information Throughout my research, I learned the history of Anishinabek News, such as: - Produced by the Communications Unit of the Union of Ontario Indians; its main office is located in North Bay - Union of Ontario Indians has published print editions for 25 years and launched a website in 2013 - Makes 11,000 copies per month which are distributed to various other groups across Canada - Represents Odawa, Ojibway, Pottawatomi, Delaware, Chippewa, Algonquin and Mississauga groups - Readers can submit letters, articles and photos for publications (Note: all submissions are reviewed) Contact Anishinabek News by their toll free number: 1-877-702-5200 or email: info@anishinabek.ca
Union of Ontario Indians In addition to learning about Anishinabek News, I also learned the following information about the Union of Ontario Indians (UOI) from the director of communications, Maurice Switzer: - It is a political group organization with a grand council chief and around 70 employees - Represents 39 First Nations communities throughout Ontario - Offers young students teachings of Anishinabek Nation values and beliefs before post-secondary - Raises money for Aboriginal post-secondary students (I.e.: scholarships and bursaries) - Provides services to communities (I.e.: negotiates with the governments on Aboriginal issues) - Offers talks to nations about HIV, diabetes and anti-drug messages - Creates templates for people trying to lead their own lives (Note: first step to self-government) - Wants to teach students the history about Aboriginal culture and issues (I.e.: the treaty relationship with the Canadian government) - Provides support for Indian Communications
Maurice Switzer I learned a majority of my information from the editor of Anishinabek News and the communications director at the Union of Ontario Indians, Maurice Switzer. While learning about the organization in my interview with Maurice, I also learned details about him, for example: - He has worked in mainstream journalism for 30 years - Spent the past 14 years working at Anishinabek News/Union of Ontario Indians - He is involved with the First Nations Technical Institute; his role was to help develop the first Aboriginal – specific post-secondary diploma program in journalism in Canada - He wants to create positive changes through stories and articles
