  1. BONDING OF BRICKWORK NYANGARA JOSEPHAT 2012BC24948

  2. Definitions Bonding is the interplacement of bricks immediately above or bellow each course to avoid straight joints in wall construction Purpose of Bonding The reason for bonding brickwork are • To straighten wall • To ensure that all beds are evenly distributed • To make sure that the wall is able to withstand lateral or sideway presure

  3. The straight joints of a unbounded wall make it weak and liable to failure, to maintain strength the bricks bust be tapped one over the other in successive courses along the wall and in its thickness there are practical method using either half brick lap or a quarter brick lap called half bond

  4. If the lap is greater or smaller than these then both the appearance and the strength is affected, if bricks are so placed that no lap occurs then the straight joint are directly above each other causing a straight joint

  5. Types of Bonds • Stretcher bond The face bonding consist of only the stretcher except only where the return angle ends occurs. To maintain maximum strength half bond should be maintained at all time • English Bond Consist of alternate courses of headers and stretchers it’s a very strong bond with no straight bond appearing. Applied to a wall when strength is preferred to appearance

  6. Flemish bond Consist of alternative headers and stretcher in the same course, commonly used in brick wall with a decorative nature. The header must be in the centre stretch in courses above and bellow
