  1. Exodus 3:1-5, 14 Topic: Burning Bush on Holy Ground

  2. Focus on Moses • In the Hebrew language, Mosheh means "drawn" from the water. God appointed him to be the leader and deliverer of his people. • Its like being in the right place at the right time in the “squirrel story.”

  3. Key Points • A. Beyond the Wilderness is the Dwelling Place of God on Holy Ground • B. When The Burning Bush Captures our Attention, We are Drawn to Holy Ground at the Right Time • C. The Burning Bush on Holy Ground is in the Right Place at the Right Time

  4. Beyond the Wilderness is the Dwelling Place of God on Holy Ground Exodus 3:1 Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

  5. The Map Drawn • The desert of Midian is symbolic of emptiness and destitute. • The wilderness is symbolic of danger and unrest. • The mountain of God is symbolic of safety and peace.

  6. Compare Luke 2:8-9a, Luke 15:5-6, John 10:11 • The shepherds who were keeping their flock received the tidings of our Savior’s birth. • The Shepherd finds the lost sheep. • Jesus says, "I am the Good Shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  7. Employment Moses employment outlook goes through a divine transition from tending to a flock of sheep to caring for the people of God. He would be tasked with leading them from the wilderness of sin to the promised land and holy living in God.

  8. When The Burning Bush Captures our Attention, We are Drawn to Holy Ground at the Right Time Exodus 3:2-3 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. 3Then Moses said, ‘I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up.’

  9. Curiosity Moses natural curiosity led him to ask himself questions. Professionals in Behavior Psychology contend that "Creative individuals have a need to seek novelty and an ability to pose unique questions. So Moses intellectual interest led him to inquire of this unusual everlasting burning bush. He developed an eager desire to learn what is happening.

  10. Extraordinary Manifestation • The great surprise in the bush burning, when he perceived no fire on earth kindled it, the bush did not consume, v. 2. • The old folks say that was "A Green Burning Bush." • Moses curiosity was complicated. "It was an angel of the Lord that appeared to him" and it was the divine presence and glory; but he heard God in it speaking to him. "

  11. Is there a Burning Bush trying to get YOUR attention? Do we say, I must turn off the television? I must put off being busy doing what I like to do everyday? I must turn aside to see what God wants with me?

  12. The Burning Bush on Holy Ground is in the Right Place at the Right Time Exodus 3:4-5 • When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, ‘Moses, Moses!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ Then he said, ‘Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. • 5b…. take off the shoes from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground.

  13. James 4:8 "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…" When God saw that he took notice of the burning bush, and turned aside to see it, and left his business to attend it, then God called to him.

  14. Exodus 3:14 “I Am” God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am.’ He said further, ‘Thus you shall say to the Israelites, “I am has sent me to you.” ’ In other words, I am sending you to give them the good news of their new home in the Promised Land that is filled with milk and honey.

  15. Moses Excuses and Jesus say’s Deny Yourself • his insignificance, (Exodus 3:11,12), • the fear that his brethren would not believe him (Exodus 4:1), • and his inability to speak with fluency (Exodus 4:10-12). Matthew 16:24, 26 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

  16. Paul Explains in Romans 12:17-21 • Do not repay anyone evil for evil. • Do not take revenge, …for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. • Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

  17. The Story of Tony Compolo when he was a Boy concluded with him not knowing his mother followed him to and from school each day. That is the way Jesus is. He wants to be there for you in case you need him.
