  1. MR. NGENO K. KIBETOLE TIPIS GIRLS SCHOOL WEBQUEST BIOLOGY FORM 3 POLLUTION

  2. Biology form three • ECOLOGY • Pollution • By the end of the Lesson Learner describe Fresh water pollution,Sources of Pollutants and their control

  3. Rationale • Out of all the water on Earth only about 2.5% is freshwater and of that only about 1% is accessible. With evening less than 1% being safe to drink for mankind. Out of all the water on the Earth and less than 1% has to supply everyone on Earth. Yet mankind is polluting the water sources leaving us less safe water to live on. • Introduction •  There are only a few things humans need to survive food, shelter, and WATER. You can only go about 3 days without water. Yet there is less than 1% drinkable water on Earth for all of mankind to share. With extraction of  certain types of nonrenewable resources however this limited amount of drinkable water can be polluted. You may wonder why we care about the pollution of freshwater sources? Think about how Earth and mankind would suffer if all of the drinkable freshwater was polluted. How would you survive?

  4. TASK • By the end of the WebQuest you will have gained knowledge about freshwater pollution. You will be able to identify the main causes of freshwater pollution and why they occur. As well as provide your friends & family with proposed solutions to this issue and what will happen if something s not done about this pollution.

  5. PROCESS • Step 1: You will explore the listed websites below to gain an understanding about freshwater pollution. • https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/freshwater/pollution/ • https://u.osu.edu/waterpollution2367/freshwater-pollution/ • https://www.greenfacts.org/en/water-resources/figtableboxes/5.htm • http://www.miningfacts.org/Environment/What-is-acid-rock-drainage/ • Step 2: You will define in your own words based on the website articles these terms: freshwater. freshwater pollution, acid runoff, groundwater, and water quality. • Step 3: Brainstorm the causes of freshwater pollution. • Step 4: Brainstorm where these causes are from.

  6. CONT… • There are lots of causes of freshwater pollution from the farm to mining and then to the big city. On farms the livestock feces can go into the groundwater making the water unclean. Coal mining and mines cause acid mine drainage which is the number one cause of water pollution in mid-Atlantic region.  As well as chemicals from certain processed production plants leaking into drinkable water sources through things such as business practices that aren't strict enough. As humans we pollute our waters everyday, in third world countries, which produce 70% of the world's freshwater pollution.

  7. Cont…. • Step 5: Answer these questions: • 1. Why do you think third world countries make the most freshwater pollution? • 2. Why do we not have harsher environmental rules for farms & businesses in regards to water pollution? • 3. Why do we not have harsher regulations for mining companies? • Step 6: Look at these articles about fresh water pollution accidents that have impacted entire communities.  • https://www.cnn.com/2016/03/04/us/flint-water-crisis-fast-facts/index.html • http://all-about-water-filters.com/terrible-water-contamination-disasters-in-history/ • https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/08/14/63-million-americans-exposed-unsafe-drinking-water/564278001/

  8. Cont… • Step 7: Out of these disasters/accidents which of them did you think was the worst? • Step 8: Brainstorm ways that you can help stop freshwater pollution. • Step 9: As a group make a PowerPoint presentation on freshwater pollution, include: • 1. The main causes of freshwater pollution • 2. The countries that contribute the most to freshwater pollution. • 3. The industries that contribute the most to freshwater pollution. • 4. How we can stop freshwater pollution on a large scale. • 5. How you can do your part to lessen freshwater pollution. • 6. Why it is important we lessen freshwater pollution.

  9. Evaluation

  10. Conclusion •  Clean and safe drinking water is important to the survival of humankind and that we can reproduce & live on for generations to come. If we do not take better care of our freshwater sources they will become unclean and unable to be used by humans.  • What will you tell your family about freshwater pollution to get them to help in the freshwater fight?  • Click here to give feedback to the author
