  2. SUBCULTURE • What is a subculture? • Can you name any subcultures? • Work in a group. Imagine you were asked to write a definition of the word „subculture“ for Encyclopaedia Britannica.

What is a subculture - definition • SUBCULTURE is a community of people that is characteristic for its specific features (values, symbols, bahaviour, habits, appearance etc.) within a larger cultural framework in which it belongs. Subculture purposely keeps its peculiarity among dominant standards, some of which it deliberately negates. PHEW!!!

  4. LOS EXAMPLOS • squatters • graffiti painters • skateboarders • anarchists • skinheads • techno (and other) dancers • neo-Nazis • hooligans • hippies? • rastafarians • satanists • athletes? • hackers? • vegetarians, vegans • formerly: hippies, yuppies, punkers, rockers, hipsters, hoboes

  5. ABOUT YOURSELVES • Do you consider yourself a member of any subculture? • Are there any subculture group at our school?

  6. Specific features • How are subcultures different from the mainstream society? • How can you tell someone belongs to a certain subculture?

  7. …SPECIFIC FEATURES • specific lifestyle • different values from the mainstream society • considered to be extremists, non-conformists, villains, terrorists, fighting against everything and everybody

  8. THEIR CHARACTER • subcultures are characteristic especially for youth • subcultures create natural environment against the background of peer groups • subcultures provide temporary refuge in the period of self-searching

  9. BEING ALTERNATIVE • Do subculture members fight against something? What is it? • What are the dangers of such groups of people?

  10. Are you an extremist?  • Is there anything you don’t like about our society? • Do you fight against such things? • How?

  11. LOVE OR HATRED? • Is there any subculture that appeals to you? Which one? Why? • Prepare a five-minute-long presentation about a subculture of your own choice.

PRESENTATIONS • Speaking, not reading, if pairwork – both will speak equally • length – 5mins • PowerPoint presentation (but not just a text that you read, but some pictures, „quotes“, notes etc. • relevant vocabulary (list of vocab will be included in the presentation, at the beginning) • pronunciation – check pronunciation of unknown words (e.g. www.howjsay.com) • 3 questions for the audience to check understanding, GOOD LUCK 
