  2. DICK HEBDIGE (1979) Dick Hebdige wrote a book about the idea of subcultures.

  3. Sarah thornton (1995) Sarah Thornton is a writer of culture. She writes articles and has also published a book about subcultures.

  4. PUNK SUBCULTURE The punk subculture emerged in the USA, UK and Australia in the mid 1970s. It’s centred around listening to recordings or live concerts of loud, aggressive rock music. Punks would outrage others with their choice of clothing, hairstyles, tattoos, jewellery and cosmetics.

  5. HIPPIE SUBCULTURE The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that started in the USA during the mid 1960’s and spread around the world.

  6. EMO SUBCULTURE Emo became a mainstream subculture in the early 2000s. They listen to music which is called ‘screamo’ which is very heavy rock. It’s also a subculture tied to fashion with skinny jeans, bright colours and studded belts.

  7. INDIE SUBCULTURE The indie subculture promotes independence from the mainstream culture. Their fashion is characterized by a free spirited style of clothing and hairstyles are often long and messy.

  8. GOTH SUBCULTURE The goth subculture is found in many countries but began in England during the early 1980s. It has associated tastes in music and fashion. There are different types of music for the goth subculture and different styles of dressing.

  9. HIP HOP SUBCULTURE Hip hop is a subculture that originated from an African-American community during the 1970s In NYC. It’s characterized by the four elements of rapping, DJing, breaking and graffiti.

  10. RAVE SUBCULTURE Rave subculture is originated from acid house parties which feature electronic music and light/laser shows. The parties they go to will be bright and neon and ravers are often associated with using the drug MDMA.

  11. SKINHEAD SUBCULTURE A skinhead is a member of a subculture that originated among working class youths in London in the 1960s and then spread among other parts of the UK. The subculture was associated with black popular music genres such as soul, ska and early reggae.
