  17. Medieval Knights * Knight was from the noble class who was a Christian warrior and defender of the faith. * When his is a boy he was a page who learned how to use a sword, ride a horse and behave like a gentlemen. * When he got older he became a squire, which was assistant to a knight.

  20. European and Japanese Feudalism Japanese Samurai European Knight The knight and samurai were very similar. Do you think you can predict some difference?

European and Japanese Feudalism * Both the knight (chivalry) and samurai (bushido) followed codes of conduct. * European feudalism was supported by Roman law where as Japanese feudalism was based on Confucian relationships. * European chivalry was different than Japanese bushido because of knights being inspired to do good deeds for the love of a noble woman.

The Medieval Manor * Manorialism was a self-contained economic system. * The center of the manor was the lords house that was surrounded by a small village. * The serfs worked together to plant and tend the lord's land and to harvest crops. * The most important thing for a serf was being obedient to a king or lord.

  24. The Medieval Manor * The role of the lady of the manor was to run the castle and its household. * The lord judged minor crimes and settled arguments among people on his manor.

Important things to remember: * The hierarchy of European feudalism was King, nobles, knights, peasants. * The most important thing for a peasant was to be obedient to the king. * Manorialism was a self-contained economic system. * Knights code was chivalry and he was a page and then a squire before becoming a knight.
