  3. TAFT • Republican • Wanting to preserve the conservative values of the party.

TAFT • Party Platform: • High import tariffs. • Put limitations on female and child labor. • Workman’s Compensation Laws. • Against initiative, referendum, and recall. • Against “bad” trusts. • Creation of a Federal Trade Commission. • Stay on the gold standard. • Conservation of natural resources because they are finite.

  5. ROOSEVELT • In 1904 TR vows not to run for re-election after his second term. • He hand picks his successor William Howard Taft who wins easily in 1908. • “Some people felt that TAFT stood for Takes Advice From Teddy

ROOSEVELT • The Progressive Party aka The Bull Moose Party • Party Platform: • Women’s suffrage. • Graduated income tax. • Inheritance tax for the rich. • Lower tariffs. • Limits on campaign spending. • Currency reform. • Minimum wage laws. • Social insurance. • Abolition of child labor. • Workmen’s compensation.

WILSON • Democratic Party Platform: • Government control of the monopolies  trusts in general were badand should be eliminates! • Tariff reduction. • One-term President. • Direct election of Senators. • Create a Department of Labor. • Strengthen the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. • Did NOT support women’s suffrage. • Opposed to a central bank. NewFreedom

  9. Wilson Wins! • First Democrat to win since 1897.

Who is Wilson? • Could not read until 10. • His first name is Thomas and he was called "Tommy" until his college years. • Was the first president to attend the Major League Baseball Fall Classic. He saw the debut of a young 20 year old  pitcher by the name of George Herman "Babe" Ruth. • Was a graduate of Princeton University and the only president to hold an earned doctoral degree. • Image is on the $100,000 bill although it is no longer in circulation. • Ellen Wilson, Wilson's first wife and mother of their three daughters, died of Bright's Disease and passed away in the White House on August 14, 1914. • Woodrow Wilson remarried on December 18, 1915 to Edith Galt.  • Sheep grazed on the White House lawn to help the Red Cross raise wool for the war effort. • The national observance of Mother's Day was established.
