  2. Title • We think that the poem will be about a woman with many children that is also in charge of the house.

  3. Paraphrase • The poem is about a thirteen year old girl with many young children. She has to carry a lot of stress on her back.

  4. Connotation • Unweaned- to accustom to food other than its mother’s milk • Mash- to reduce to a soft, pulpy mass, as by beating or pressure in preparation of food • Spoor- a track or trail • Alliteration- sickness and distress, homeless and motherless. • Stanza- lots of small paragraphs in the poem. • The left-overs, moulting gulls, and wet unweaned sacks.

  5. Attitude • The poet is indifferent throughout most of the poem. Also, in some parts she feels pity for the young girl.

  6. Shifts • Throughout the poem the speaker stays the same. The poet’s attitude changes from indifferent to pity a few times in the poem.

  7. Title • The title now means that a young woman with many children has a lot of stress that she is carrying around with her.

  8. Theme • The theme is that you need to take responsibility for your actions.
