  3. Adults should eat properly. But kids can eat what they want. Why bother about nutrition in children?

  5. Growth and Development • Good nutrition in childhood is important • Proper growth and development • Achieve maximum height potential • Malnutrition in early life can limit long term intellectual development

  6. Poor nutrition in childhood can also lead to: • Dental Caries • Anaemia • Osteoporosis • Overweight or underweight • Overweight  Well-nourished • Underweight  Eat-all-you-like

Childhood obesity • Obese children are 30% more likely to become obese adults • Obesity in adults risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some cancers, etc. • Regardless of adult weight, childhood obesity also predicted future adverse health conditions e.g heart disease, stroke and colo-rectal cancer

  19. Energy Imbalance • Each additional can/glass* of sweetened drink children consume every day increases: • risk of becoming obese by 60% • body mass index by 0.24kg/m2 (WHO Technical Report Series 916) * 1 can carbonated soft drink = 7tsp sugar (140kcal)

  20. Calorie savings 320kcal x 5 = 1600kcal 1 kg of body fat = 7000kcal 7000/1600 = 1 month Calorie from soft drinks =320kcal Assuming child takes 2 cans, 5 days a week, he accumulates 1kg body fat in 1 MONTH!

  21. Bone Health • Soft drink consumption was associated with decreased consumption of milk (calcium, vitamin B) and fruit juice (folate, vitamin C). • Maximising peak bone mass is important in the primary prevention of osteoporosis.
