  2. Pleasing to God • Praise Him—in prayer and in song • Proclaim the soul-saving message of the gospel to others • To offer words of encouragement to one another • To exhort, rebuke, and reconcile

  3. Pleasing to God • Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing • Never pleased when we use our tongue for gossip, lies, expressions of bitterness and anger, idle talk

  4. Pleasing to God • No such inconsistency is found in nature • From the tongue both good and evil come to man: if it be good, there is nothing better; if bad, there is nothing worse

  5. Pleasing to God • Psalm 19 • The lawof the LORD is perfect • The statutesof the LORD are trustworthy • The precepts of the LORD are right • The commands of the LORD are radiant • The ordinances of the LORD are sure

  6. Pleasing to God • Psalm 19:14 • May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

  7. Pleasing to Man • Colossians 4:6 • Grace—a favor which one receives without any merit of his own • Grace—that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, causes favorable regard

  8. Pleasing to Man • Colossians 4:6 • Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

  9. Pleasing to Man • Colossians 4:6 • Let your speech always be with [undeserved love and favor], seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

  10. Pleasing to Man • Colossians 4:6 • Let your speech always be with [that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, causes favorable regard], seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

  11. Pleasing to Man • Colossians 4:6 • Adam Clark and Albert Barnes were Bible scholars in the 1700 and 1800s. They both wrote commentaries in popular use today. Paraphrasing a few of their comments—

  12. Pleasing to Man • Ephesians 4:29 • Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

  13. Pleasing to Man • Corrupt—means bad, decayed, rotten, and is applied to putrid vegetables or animal substances • To denote that which is depraved, evil • That tends to corrupt others

  14. Hitting Me Hard

  15. Pleasing to Man • Proverbs 15:1-2 • A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. • The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.

  16. Pleasing to Man • Gentleness will often disarm the most furious • One angry word will always beget another • Just as rage produces rage, kindness produces kindness

  17. Used For Peace • Matthew 5:9 • Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.

  18. Used For Peace • Peace is like a compound…making two into one • Peace restores to a state of unity • A peacemaker will use his wisdom, influence, and speech to restore unity

  19. Used For Peace • James 3:17 • But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

  20. My Speech • Pleasing to God • Use my tongue to praise God, to teach His word, never in a way that would hurt His cause • Let the words of my mouth be pleasing to God – Ps 19:14

  21. My Speech • Pleasing to man • Let me ALWAYS speak to others with kindness and calmness whether I think they deserve it or not. I didn’t deserve the salvation God so graciously gave me. Let me speak to others as I would want them to speak to me.

  22. My Speech • Pleasing to man • Let me NEVER use words that would tear down, or belittle, or in any way be unkind to another • Let me remember that a soft answer turns away wrath

  23. My Speech • Used for making peace • Let me use my tongue to make peace—to reconcile and encourage, never to stir up strife; never to gossip, ridicule, or slander

  24. My Speech • Used for making peace • Godly wisdom, my example, is pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy

  25. Acts 16—Lydia • ‘good’ person • Worshipped God • At place of prayer • Something lacking • Heard words of Paul • Baptized
