  2. How do scientists learn about Earth’s interior? • Direct evidence – rock samples • Indirect evidence – seismic waves • Earthquake waves move at different rates through different materials

  3. Crust • Thinnest layer (5 – 70 km below surface) • Composition – solid rock

  4. Mantle • Three Parts: • Lithosphere – Very top of mantle AND the crust, made up of solid rock, broken into plates • Asthenosphere – below lithosphere, “soft” solid rock, “plastic-like” (able to flow SLOWLY) • Lower Mantle– solid rock

  5. Core • Outer core • Liquid metal (nickel and iron) • Inner core • Solid metal (nickel and iron) due to intense pressure

  6. Trends in Earth’s Layers • Temperature • As you move deeper into Earth, temperature increases • Pressure • As you move deeper into Earth, pressure increases • Density • As you move deeper into Earth, density increases (due to increased pressure)
