Carbohydrates • Primary source of energy • Provides energy for muscles, nerves and brain 2 TYPES OF CARBOHYDRATES • Complex – provide calories and other nutrients • “Starches” – breads, noodles, grains, cereals, potatoes, nuts, seeds, dried beans, lentils, peas, vegetables, and some fruits Simple – provides calories, but not much else all types of sugars and ‘natural’ sugars in honey, corn and some fruits – biggest offenders of weight gain.

  4. What does that really mean? • Calories – The amount of fuel provided in a food. Any fuel not burned after eating is placed in storage. • Serving Size- A balance and healthy portion determined by the USDA • Daily Percentages- Healthy proportions of individual food companies

  6. Proteins • Essential for body growth and repair of body cells, fight infection and make blood strong • Sources: • Fish • Meat • Chicken • Egg • Milk • Beans

  7. Fats • Provides energy and ‘fatty acids,’ and helps in digestion. Too much fat can be harmful. • 4 TYPES OF FATS • Saturated Fats- raise cholesterol levels, causing heart disease. • Trans Fats- lower HDL – good cholesterol • Monounsaturated Fats • Polyunsaturated Fats • Mono and poly fats help to lower bad cholesterol, decreasing the risk of heart disease • www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gqo3Y6WFYA

Their main function is to facilitate and regulate body processes. • 2 MAIN GROUPS • Fat Soluble: absorbed along with fats and can be stored in the body. They include Vitamin A,D,E, and K. • Water Soluble: include the B-complex vitamin and Vitamin C.

  10. Water • Transports other nutrients to cells, carries wastes away, aids digestion and more.
