Recertification • CEU requirements • Ongoing Cycle: Jan 1, ends Dec 31, of the following year • CE content: earned within your recertification cycle and relevant to HIM field – 80% of all CEUs must be HIM domain; 20% topics not relevant to HIM • Calculation of CEUs based upon clock hours. One (1) CEU for each 60 minutes of attendance or participation that is fixed in length. Fractional parts of an hour less than 45 minutes is not a full hour credit. i.e. 2-1/2 hour is two CEUs • CEU Reporting Online

Recertification • When to report: several months prior to your cycle end date but no later than three (3) months into the following year. • Recertification timeline: • Dec 31 of previous year: Deadline for earning CEUs • Mar 31: Deadline for reporting CEUs • Mar 31 – Jun 30: Inactive • Jun 30: Deadline to report CEUs with late fee • Jun 30 – Dec 31: Revoked • Dec 31: Reactivate by CE with fees or Exam • After Dec 30: Retake the applicable certification exam

  13. Sound the alarm • For the dinosaurs it was a giant meteor. • For fax machines it was the invention of e-mail. • And for HIM professionals who don’t adapt to new workforce needs, the paradigm shift that rocks their work roles will be electronic health records (EHRs).

Sound the alarm • The EHR hasn’t changed the need or demand for HIM professionals’ skills, it has drastically changed the way those skills are applied and has accelerated the need for professionals to add new electronic-based abilities. • It’s still time for HIM professionals to adapt to the new healthcare environment and prosper in its opportunities.

Curriculum Changes • Increase technical knowledge • Give students more business acumen, statistical and analytical skills, and awareness of accounting and finance • Discussing the need for Information Governance Certification • Elevate our minimum educational requirements to keep pace with other professionals in the allied healthcare field with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees
