  2. Background Information! • His real name is José de la Cruz Porfirio Díaz • Born-September 15, 1830 in Oaxaca, Mexico • His father was an innkeeper and died 3 years after Porfirio’s birth. • Died- July 2, 1915 • He was educated for the Catholic Church and its schools.

Where His Title Came From. • At 16, he heard stories about war with the U.S. from revolutionary soldiers, so he decided he wanted to join the National Guard. • He didn’t have money to go to Mexico City by train so he had to walk the 250 miles. • By time he got there, the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo had already been signed • So, he went back to his hometown of Oaxaca and studied law

A New Chapter • In his hometown, he became under the notice of Don Marcos Perez (judge) and Benito Juárez (the governor of Oaxaca) and became famous for being the deliverer of Mexico • At the time, Santa Anna was running for dictator and Porfirio refused to vote for him • Orders were given for his arrest but he ended up becoming one of the leaders of the War of Reform. • Under Juárez, he became a general for a division of the army! • In 1862, the French invaded Maximilian became emperor in 1864 but that didn’t stop Diáz. • At the time of Maximilian's death Diáz was carrying on the siege of Mexico city. Thus, ending in the surrender of the town two days after the emperor was shot. He then returned to his soldiers to pay them for their hard work and dedication. This showed his great administrative powers. • He became the President of Mexico in 1877 until 1880 • He was reelected for a second term in 1884 but resigned in 1911 due to a government collapse and was exiled to France for the remainder of his life • Ended up marrying twice and had a son and two daughters
