  1. LENT Lent is a time to renew and restore our relationship with Christ.

  2. Definition of Lent In the Christian Liturgical calendar Lent is the penitential period of 40 days between Lent & Easter. Lent is an Old English word –meaning Spring. In some traditional languages - the word for Lent is Quaresimomeaning 40.

  3. According to Biblical accounts Jesus went into the wilderness for 40 days of fasting, meditation & reflection before beginning his ministry. The number 40 recalls great moments in Faith. The flood of Noah, the wandering of the Hebrews in the desert for 40 years & the Risen Christ appeared to his followers for 40 days before his Ascension

  4. ASHES? The palms used on Palm Sunday from the previous year. In the 400’s - public sinners made a public confession of their sins before the Bishop and the community. Dressed in sackcloth the bishop sprinkled ashes on their heads and assigned strict penances for 40 days.

  5. They were welcomed back to the community on Holy Thursday During the Ash Wednesday Mass the minister would place ash on the people’s forehead. .

  6. TODAY: On Ash Wednesday we mark our forehead with these ashes as a reminder of ... ... the kingship of Christ. ... Christ’s sacrifice for us. ... the celebration of new life. ... our sorrow for our sins. ... our Christian community When you were baptised, people made a small sign of the cross on your forehead. Ashes are a sign that a fire has gone out. Sometimes we forget that we belong to Jesus Christ and we need to light the ‘fire’ of his love in our hearts once again.

  7. Lent is a chance to encounter Jesus, to remember again his invitation to chat, to come and see who he really is. It is a rich season for schools to look into the face of Jesus, not merely in our chapel and classrooms with crucifixes and other images. Every encounter we have with a student, colleague or (parent) or staff member can lead to a more profound realisation about our lives in Christ.

  8. We can enable this deeper encounter with Christ through the Great Pillars of Lent: • Fasting • Prayer • Almsgiving
