  1. LENT Make or Break a Habit

  2. Lent is NOT about… • Giving up Coke or chocolate every year • Giving up something you don’t want to do • Giving up something you’ll never do • Giving up something just to splurge on Easter

  3. Lent is NOT about… Lent is about… • Giving up Coke or chocolate every year • Giving up something you don’t want to do • Giving up something you’ll never do • Giving up something just to splurge on Easter • Sacrifice • Learning to live without something • Removing obstacles that keep you from God • Becoming more like the person God intended you to be Lent involves making/breaking habits

  4. Habits • Definition: an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary “First we form habits, then they form us. Conquer your bad habits or they will conquer you.” “Attitudes are nothing more than habits of thoughts, and habits can be acquired. An action repeated becomes an attitude realized.”

  5. Temptation “God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” 1 Cor 10:13 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James1:2-4

  6. Grace Justice is getting what we deserve.   Mercy is not getting what we deserve.   Grace is getting what we don't deserve.

  7. To make Lent more meaningful… • Don’t just give up the same thing you give up every year. Put some thought into it. Oh, it’s Lent again…

  8. To make Lent more meaningful… • Think of something that you love but don’t need. Challenge yourself to think about something that will be a true sacrifice to you at this time in your life.

  9. To make Lent more meaningful… • Don’t just focus on “giving up” something this year. You may find that you want to “take on” something this year.

  10. Reflection • Habits • Have you been able to develop a habit (that lasted past Lent) from Lent? If so, what was it? If not, what habit would you like to develop? • Temptations • Talk about a time when you didn’t give into temptation and how it made you feel stronger. • Grace • Describe a situation when you received forgiveness or treatment you didn’t think you deserved and how it made you feel.
