Do Now Answer the following questions on a sheet of paper: 1. What is your favorite season? 2. What is your least favorite season? Now create a table like the one shown below to share what these seasons mean for you and why you do/ do not like them! (Try to have at least 5 under each label!!)
Subjects • Person, place, thing, or idea the sentence is about • The “who” or “what” word in the sentence • To find the subject: ask “WHO or WHAT is this sentence about?” or “WHO or WHAT is doing something in this sentence?”
Examples of Subject • People applauded. • Who is this sentence about? • Gloria wrote the answers on the board. • Who is doing something in this sentence?
Answers • People applauded. • The people are the ones who are applauding. • Gloria wrote the answers on the board. • Gloria is the one who wrote answers on the board. • Extra Note: The subject will ALWAYS be either a NOUN or PRONOUN
Verbs • Express action • Tell what the subject is doing • Ask “What is the subject doing?” • Examples: People applauded. What is our subject? What is our subject doing?

Linking Verbs • Join (or link) the subject to something that is said about the subject • Example- Gloria is a teacher. Who is the subject? -The linking verb is connects the subject (Gloria) with what is said about her– that she is a teacher.
Linking Verbs Be in all its forms: am , is, are, was, were is the most common linking verb. Others: Look stay taste remain Grow smell seem appear Feel become sound turn
Linking Verb Practice • The crowd grew quiet. The president stepped up to the podium. • Yes, sir, Juan has been here all morning • The light show is spectacular. • The ugly duckling became a beautiful swan. • Which of you have been absent from school this week?
Literary Terms • Repetition- use, more than once, of any element of language- a sound, word, phrase, clause, or sentence Ex- “I have a dream” • Refrain- repeated line or group of lines in a poem or song. • Rhyme- repetition of sounds at the END of words
Rhyme • End rhyme- rhyming words come at the end of lines Swans sing before they die- ‘twere no bad thing Should certain persons die before they sing • Internal rhyme- rhyming words appear in the same line Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary
