Increasing family engagement and student achievementthrough title I Dr. Grant Rivera Westlake High School Fulton County Schools
Current realities • Achievement gaps between subgroups • Lack of responsiveness by students and parents • Increasing accountability
priorities • Increase degree of family engagement • Increase student achievement
From my perspective • South Cobb High School – Cobb County, GA • 2005-2009 • Campbell High School – Cobb County, GA • 2009-2011 • Westlake High School – Fulton County, GA • 2011-Present • National Family Engagement Consultant (k-12) • 2007-Present
Achievement gaps • Identify areas of “academic priority” • Weight of specific domains on a given test • Critical skills within a given domain • Identify areas of individual student strength and weakness • Building parent and student efficacy • Practice, practice, practice…everywhere!
Engaging the traditionally “disengaged” – THE WHO • Identify your target group of students • At-risk vs. bubble • Who are your most “critical” students? • Building capacity • 95% vs. 5% • Who else can join us in this important work?
Engaging the traditionally “disengaged” – THE WHAT • Consistent and purposeful message • What can we learn from my dentist? • Don’t be afraid to speak to “subgroups” • Take the message to a captive audience • Marquee events • Front yards and living rooms • Always make it personal and linked to student achievement • What can we learn from elementary conference week? • Show the family they make a difference
And one more consideration… Administration
For the work you will lead and the difference you will make tomorrow…thank you Dr. Grant Rivera Principal Westlake High School riverag@fultonschools.org
