  3. PGCE primary recruitment at LSBU and other London universities is significantly reduced. Some London universities are still trying to recruit. Primary school direct unsalaried routes have gone unfilled. Primary salaried SD routes have been more successful.

  4. Government Priorities • Teacher training is based ‘on the job’. • Schools should take a greater role in initial teacher education. • HEIs need to work more in partnership with schools. • Under-graduate routes into teaching should be reduced. • Change the way allocations are made to outstanding providers. • Higher qualifications required.

  5. What is School Direct? School Direct is an employment based Initial Teacher Education Training Programme. Trainees are recruited and selected by the schools. There is a salaried and unsalaried route.

The underlying principles • To give schools the ability to influence the way in which ITE is delivered. • To enable schools to recruit and select the trainees that best meet their needs. • To introduce choice into the ITE system by enabling schools to negotiate with their chosen provider how they wish to use their School Direct place/s.

SD/PGCE at LSBU • Trainee completes the same high quality training as a traditional PGCE route. • This year the taught programme included a two week summer school and then every Friday throughout the year. • Trainees have courses in maths, English, science and computing, foundation subjects and professional studies. • Trainees are mentored and supported by the school and LSBU through Academic Advisor and pastoral system and a University Supervising Tutor making regular visits to the school.

Trainees all take part in two Masters Level Modules so they have the opportunity of gaining a PGCE • Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship (prepares trainees for working in London schools). • All trainees in discussion with the school have access to a specialised curriculum module. • Specialist modules are delivered by LSBU, school staff and external providers.

  10. Why work in partnership with LSBU? We have ten years experience of working with school led training routes. Our employment based routes were graded as good in our last Ofsted inspection. We offer an opportunity for trainees to gain QTS with PGCE status and also 60 M Level credits. Our training is modular. This gives schools and trainees flexible options to prioritise training to meet the needs of the trainee and the school.

  11. Salaried Route • Government grant approx. £16 000 –payment comes through LA payroll directly to the school • The school supplements the grant (trainee is paid as unqualified teacher) • School pays PGCE fee of £ 7500 (£1500 is deducted from PGCE fee of £ 9000 to allow for mentoring and administration by the school). • In the unsalaried route the trainee pays the fee, but is entitled to a student loan.
