  1. My Life Monday Is it a cold or the flu? It’s winter and most of us are likely to catch a bad cold or flu. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference between a common cold or serious flu. We all know that they are both contagious respiratory infections caused by a virus but here is where the similarity ends. The first question that comes to mind is, what’s the difference? And you probably want to know how to protect yourself from a cold or the flu? You might already have an idea of how both infections spread but are you aware of the symptoms? Read on to find out more….

  2. The difference.. A cold comes on gradually, usually two or three days after catching the infection. Some of the symptoms include a running & stuffy nose, itchy throat, cough or sneeze. Colds usually last for a week and rarely develop into serious problems. But one thing for sure, they make life uncomfortable! The flu on the other hand is sudden. It usually starts with a headache, dry cough or chills and leads to high fever, muscle ache, chest pain, weakness and fatigue. This infection prolongs for 2 to 3 weeks.

  4. Prevention is the best cure! It is best to avoid getting sick. You are well aware that the cold & flu spread through the air when someone sneezes or coughs. It can also be contracted through direct contact, when shaking hands or greeting a person. Other indirect ways of contracting the infection occurs when sharing a beverage or towel. Don’t alienate yourself, be courteous, at the same time cautious and try not to catch it! Sometimes it’s unavoidable so be prepared to take care of yourself when you do get a cold or flu.

  5. Here is a list of what you can do • Get a lot of rest. Don’t exert yourself until your body recovers • and has enough energy to fight the virus. When you have a flu • and fever, it is very important to stay in bed until the fever subsides • Stay warm and try to avoid cold drinks and ice cream. • Drink 8 glasses of water a day and a few warm drinks. Warm • or hot drinks can help clear congestion and relieve your soar throat. • Try gargling with warm water and a little salt each morning to get • rid of the soar throat and cough. • Take a lukewarm bath to feel better. It will also help reduce a fever • in case you have the flu. • If you smoke, avoid smoking or being around others who smoke. • Smoke can make your sore throat and congestion even worse. • If the flu or cold persists, it would be wise to consult a physician • who will provide you with the right medication.

  6. To prevent getting a cold or the flu, make sure you eat healthy, exercise properly and get sufficient rest. A strong immune system can help prevent a common cold or flu.
