  2. How large are cells? • Most cells are less than 100μm in diameter • Why do you think this is important?

  3. The Cell Cycle • Cell Cycle- cells reproduce by a cycle of growing and dividing • Cell cycle consist of three main stages • Interphase • Mitosis • Cytokinesis

  4. Steps to cell cycle • Interphase- the stage during which the cell grows, carries out cellular functions, and replicates, or makes copies of DNA

  5. Chromosomes • Chromosomes- DNA of is divided into segments and binds with proteins • Chromatin- uncoiled chromosomes that are fully extended into threadlike strands

  6. Steps to Cell cycle • Mitosis- is the stage of the cell cycle during which the cell’s nucleus and nuclear materials divide • Cytokinesis- method by which a cell’s cytoplasm divides, creating a new cell

  7. Steps to cell cycle • Prophase- First step to mitosis which cell spends most of its time in, where chromatin condenses into chromosomes

  8. Prophase • Sister chromatids- are structures that contain the identical copies of DNA • Centromere- Structure at center of chromosome where the sister chromatids are attached

  9. Steps of Cell Cycle • Metaphase- spindle apparatus pulls sister chromatids into the center of the cell on metaphase plate • Spindle apparatus- spindle fibers, centrioles and aster fibers

  10. Steps of Cell Cycle • Anaphase-Chromatids are pulled apart breaking at the centromere and begin moving to opposite poles

  11. Steps of Cell Cycle • Telophase- is last stage of mitosis where chromosomes arrive at poles and begin to decondense (untrist)
