  2. Hitting the Mark Introduction • Working in pairs discuss with your partner what you think are the top 2 features in a good quality 5-Step Method intervention • Write these two features on a post it and stick it to flipchart

Common Features of a Good Quality Intervention • Listen actively, summarise and ask relevant questions • Structure the session and timing to follow all criterion within each step • Help FM explore issues, look at the advantages and disadvantages and elicit choices so the FM reaches a deeper/acceptance • Normalise and give realistic optimism • Manner and relationship The importance of self-assessment and work reports

Listen Actively, Summarise and ask Relevant Questions • Summarise every 10 minutes and check with FM if you have ‘got it’ and relate back to 5-Step criteria e.g. “So you have said a lot about the stresses x causes you, can I just check I have understood these correctly. Say what they are and then say so which of these causes you the most stress”. • Explore, with relevant questions to gain the specific examples, make it real. Skills Practice: • Using reflective statements • Guide from a general discussion to providing specific examples

Structure the session and timing to follow all criterion within each step • You are there to guide the FM through the Step • Knowing the intervention well helps it to flow • The benefit to FMs of a structured yet relaxed session • Encourage FMs to use the handbook • Audio Clips • Pulling the session back – useful phrases

  6. Help FM explore issues, look at the advantages and disadvantages and elicit choices • Get the FM to generate a list of the issues – then support them to go through the advantages and disadvantages • Resist the temptation to come in with the answers (non-directive and non-judgmental) • Eliciting choices can be difficult – TINA & TAAA • There may not be a solution • Again ask the FM for specific examples from the previous week • Audio Clip • Trainees find 4.5 difficult – Why do you think that is?

Normalise and Give Realistic Optimism • Counsellor says at least once in every session that other FMs often report this, very normal for FM to feel like this or have these symptoms • Be realistic that FM can change how they are supported/cope and this may help FM but may not be able to change person with drug problem • Audio Clips

  8. Manner and Relationship • All did this very well • Put FM at ease, could hear them smiling in the tapes – showed warmth and empathy • Thanked them for coming, said many people find it difficult and hear to listen to you and how things have been • Audio Clips
