  1. Public opinion seems to be divided on whether CBT for stress and anxiety is better when compared to medication. Both treatments have their own pros and cons, with the main argument being that there is no perfect treatment for anxiety disorders. In this article we will look at the two approaches in more detail and come up with a conclusion as to which one should be used for different types of people. What are your views on this? Therapy takes a lot of time and if you have other commitments such as family, a job or children it can be difficult to find the time. On the other hand, medication is more practical in that you can take it every day and there is no waiting for the effects to kick in. For example, if you use CBT on your own you'll need to spend at least a couple of hours on this every day and this can leave little time for work or family commitments. You might find that CBT works better for you when there are issues with your life; for instance, if you don't have enough support from family and friends or perhaps the reason why you have anxiety is due to other mental health problems such as depression.

  2. When you look at the pros and cons of CBT it could be said that this approach works best for people who: – Have other mental health problems such as depression. – Have a lot of family and social support. – Are able to take time out to learn new skills. – Feel motivated to change their lives for them and for the better. On the other hand, medication is better suited for people who: – Don't want to spend a lot of time in therapy. (Although CBT is becoming more streamlined these days). – Don't have issues with other health factors such as depression.

  3. – Want to deal with the root cause of their anxiety. – Have a busy life like most people do. People who go for medication usually want fast results and want something that will take the edge off their symptoms immediately. For example, if you have an exam coming up in school or college you can take some medication to calm your nerves before it starts. On the other hand, CBT can work when used over many months or even years so it might not provide the immediate results that someone may expect. If you use medication without doing any form of therapy then you are only treating symptoms without getting to the root cause of your problems and this is like trying to put a band aid on a broken leg. This approach can be dangerous because there is no guarantee that you will get the results you are looking for. You could end up taking the medication too often and this could have very bad effects on your health.

  4. On the other hand, if you do go through therapy then there is some evidence to suggest that CBT can work as well as or better than medication. In a way, it is a personal choice but you should consider what might suit your needs and what doesn't. For example, if you are thinking about going through CBT then it could be better for you to take action rather than sit around until things get better by it. In conclusion, both treatments can make a difference in your life but the choice might come down to your own personal circumstances and needs.
