  1. Ocean Creatures Researching and Creating Life

  2. Table of Contents • Introduction • Task • Process • Evaluation • Conclusion

  3. Introduction What is an ocean? What lives in the ocean? How do plants and animals survive in the ocean? How deep in the ocean can animals live? **All of these questions and more will be answered throughout your research! It’s time to get on your scuba gear and dive in!** Brainstorm what you already know about oceans. Jot down your thoughts. These questions are guiding questions to get you thinking!

  4. Task • Today you are becoming a marine biologist! • “What is that,” you ask? This is a scientist that studies the life in oceans and seas. • You will go through this web quest to study life that inhabits different layers of the ocean. Through this, you will discover what animals look like, what they eat, what conditions they live in, and basically what they do to survive each day. • From this research, you will then create your project for “Under the Sea.” You will need to select a certain layer that this animal will live in. You will need to decide what it needs to eat, what it looks like, what its enemies are, and how it survives each day in the ocean.

  5. Process • To begin, you will need to choose a layer of the ocean to research a particular animal. Visit the links below to examine and find out facts about each layer. Take a look at all of them before deciding. http://www.seasky.org/deep-sea/ocean-layers.html http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/content/animals/articles/deepsea/ocean_zones.htm Sunlight Zone Twilight Zone Midnight Zone 2. From the websites given below, select one particular ocean creature to research. Take time to explore all of the sites before choosing one animal. http://www.seasky.org/deep-sea/ocean-layers.html http://www.mos.org/oceans/life/surface.html http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/Animals/CreatureFeature/ http://edtech.kennesaw.edu/web/seacreat.html http://www.seasky.org/reeflife/sea2.html

  6. Process continued… 3. Once you have selected one animal, use the sites to gather as much information about your animal as possible. The information you need to collect is but not limited to: -what it eats -what layer it lives in -do other animals eat it -what it looks like -how it survives each day 4. Collect all of your notes on the given paper. Take as many notes as possible! Be sure and list which sources you used. Put things in your own words; do not plagiarize. Use RELIABLE sources.

  7. Conclusion Congratulations! You are a great marine biologist. You have learned so much about the ocean and the life within. Keep up the good work to help protect our waters and all that is inside the water!
