  1. Wild at Heart Chapter 2 The Wild One Whose Image We Bare

  2. BB gun story (page 20-21) • How did it make you feel? • Have you ever been invited to be wild? p 7

  3. Seagull Story • Thoughts? p 8

  4. Many men are ashamed of their fathers. You are just like your father, is that good or bad? Most men I know are trying hard not to become like their fathers. But who does that leave them to follow after? From whom will they derive their sense of strength? We must look to our source to know who we are, what we’re made of, and what our place is. We are made in the image of God Where do we come from?(pages 22-24)

  5. What is your image of Jesus as a man? What did it used to be, has it changed over the years? To most Men, God is either distant or weak- the very thing they would report of their earthly father. What does it mean to you to try to be like Jesus? Is it to be nice, passive, loving, to be like Mother Theresa? The Image of God? p 10

  6. Jesus’ words on his ministry and purpose • Luke 4:14-20 • 14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.    16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,       because he has anointed me       to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners       and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,       19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” •    20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

  7. Isaiah 61:1 • The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,

  8. Is Jesus more like Mr.. Rogers with a beard or William Wallace? • It depends on who you are • if you are a leper, an outcast to society –”Unclean” • Matthew 8-1:3 (NLT) • 1Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. 2Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached Jesus. He knelt before him, worshiping. "Lord," the man said, "if you want to, you can make me well again." • 3Jesus touched him. "I want to," he said. "Be healed!" And instantly the leprosy disappeared. p 12

  9. or if you are a Pharisee • Luke 13:10-14 (NLT) • 10 One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue, 11 he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are healed of your sickness!" 13 Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised and thanked God! 14 But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. "There are six days of the week for working," he said to the crowd. "Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath." p 13

  10. How did Jesus respond to the Leader? • Luke 13:15-17 (NLT) • 15 But the Lord replied, "You hypocrite! You work on the Sabbath day! Don't you untie your ox or your donkey from their stalls on the Sabbath and lead them out for water? 16 Wasn't it necessary for me, even on the Sabbath day, to free this dear womanfrom the bondage in which Satan has held her for eighteen years?" 17 This shamed his enemies. And all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did. • God is not weak, nor distant • Jesus was humble and gentle, but not weak * He was gentle to those in need * He was confrontational when needed like with the Pharisees or the money changers at the temple. p 15

  11. A battle to fight (pages 25-29) • Is the Lord a gentleman? • Not if you are in the service of His enemy. God has a battle to fight, a battle for our freedom. • * Egyptians- Plagues pestilence, the death of every first born.* Canaanites- destroyed entire towns* Philistines – when Samson killed them, it was because “the Spirit of the LORD” came on him • Not “a macho man • Our image of God and of ourselves is not true p 16

  12. Job 39:19-25 • 19 "Do you give the horse his strength or clothe his neck with a flowing mane? 20 Do you make him leap like a locust, striking terror with his proud snorting? 21 He paws fiercely, rejoicing in his strength, and charges into the fray. 22 He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; he does not shy away from the sword. 23 The quiver rattles against his side, along with the flashing spear and lance. 24 In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds. 25 At the blast of the trumpet he snorts, 'Aha!' He catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry. • The war horse embodies the fierceness of his maker, so do we. Or at least we did.

  13. You can tell what kind of man you’ve got simply by the impact he has on you. • Does he make you bored? • Does he scare you with his legalism? • Does he want to make you scream because he is very nice p 17

  14. Let’s look at some scriptural references to Jesus • John 18:4-8 • 4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” 5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 “I told you that I am he,” Jesus answered. “If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” • Revelation 19:11-16 paints a picture of Christ as a fierce warrior

  15. 11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

  16. There is something fierce in the heart of God. God is a warrior • Exodus 15:3 “the Lord is a warrior the Lord is His Name”

  17. What about Adventure? (pages 29-32) • God loves wildness, look at the world he created. • Thunderstorms • Sharks • Rattlesnakes • Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh my • God proclaimed it “Good” • God made our world with adventure, risk, the element of surprise

  18. God takes risks... • God is sovereign, but takes risks • God “took a risk” with giving men and angels free will • Unlikely choice of followers to deliver the message • A prostitute, a few fishermen, a tax collector, a former Christian persecutor p 18

  19. God is a hero to this fallen world. “the Lord intervened” common in scripture • Shadrack, Meshak, and Abedego and the furnace • Daniel and the Lion’s den • Jesus was crucified and buried • God allows the odds to be stacked against Him, so He can come through,He loves to show us and the world he has what it takes. • David and Goliath • Gideon’s 300 men, armed with torches • Moses, the Israelites Vs Egypt in the Exodus • The Walls of Jericho

  20. There is something wild in the heart of God– He loves the adventure, the risk, to come through

  21. A beauty to fight for (pages 32-35) • God also has a romantic heart • God created beauty* Music, wine, poetry, sunsets, scenery

  22. God created Beauty • God wrote the Song of Solomon and put it in the Bible • Have you read any of the Song of Solomon? • What was your reaction? • Is it conceivable that this scandalous and erotic book been placed in the Bible by the Christians you know? • God created both a man and a woman and knew what the reaction would be and He called it “Good”

  23. God is jealous for the hearts of His people and their freedom • Isaiah 62:1-5 • For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. • Isaiah 63:1-4 • 1 Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? "It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save." 2 Why are your garments red, like those of one treading the winepress? 3 "I have trodden the winepress alone; from the nations no one was with me. I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing. 4 For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redemption has come. • like a blazing torch.

  24. Jesus was passionate about setting people free. The blind to see, the lame to walk, the deaf to hear…. • There is something passionate about the heart of God For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch.

  25. We all are made in His image (pages 35-38) • What word do we most commonly use with little boys? • Don’t • But boys are also the image of God • To be fierce, wild and passionate

  26. Little girls and women are also created in God’s image • Do you believe that men and women are both made in the image of God? • That man and woman are each one ½ of His wholeness? • Eve is the crown of creation. • A woman longs to be pursued to be loved and to be apart of the adventure • A woman embodies the beauty, mystery and the tender vulnerability of God

  27. God wants to be loved • God desires a relationship, time together, and a shared adventure • God unveils His beauty in creation, and delights in our worship of Him

  28. God’s image is in both men and women • There is a distinct difference but we are called at times to mirror both the masculine and feminine side of our Lord • A man needs to be tender at times and a woman sometimes needs to be fierce, but if a man is only tender we know something is deeply wrong, and if a woman is only fierce we know she is not what she is meant to be. • Psalm 62:11-12 (NIV) • One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, 12 and that you, O Lord, are loving.
