  6. Chinese Major • Approved in June 2011. • Courses offered across 5 years. • Dual degree with BA in Chinese • Chinese IEP & IBP • Chinese Flagship • Working with engineering & business professors to offer content courses in CHN

  7. Chinese Major Requirement • The University of Rhode Island offers a major and a minor in Mandarin Chinese Language. In order to complete the B.A., students must complete at least 30 credits total in Chinese (excluding CHN 101/111 and 102/112). Students must complete six credits in Chinese literature and civilization, at least three of which must be taken at 400 level, and must complete one additional 400-level Chinese course.

  8. In addition, students must also take six credits in Chinese/Asian history, Chinese/Asian politics or Chinese/Asian philosophy offered through other departments in English. Students must choose these six credits from the courses listed below, which can be counted towards the General Education requirement, or from other courses on Chinese culture and civilization as approved by the program director. http://www.uri.edu/artsci/ml/chinese/index.html

  15. Curriculum • Winter Immersion • 2 weeks before the spring semester • URI Chinese Summer School • 4 weeks at URI & 4 weeks at Zhejiang U. • 8 weeks at Ocean University of China • Workshops • One-to-one or group tutoring

  16. Is the learner well prepared? According to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), in order to reach ILR 3: General Professional Proficiency, • The learner of Chinese language will spend 2200 hours, plus the second year in-country • In contrast, the learner of Spanish, French or Italian needs only 570-600

In China, I sang in a televised talent competition, climbed Yellow Mountain, became the first foreigner to visit a remote village, and found a dear friend whom I miss every day. It is not an exaggeration to say that the capstone year changed my life. I am a different person now for having lived in China--and a better person, too, I think."
