  2. Subordination differs from coordination.

  3. In coordination you have two equal parts which makes a compound sentence. • IC, for IC. • IC = IC. • The man looked out to sea, for he was waiting for his sweetheart.

  4. But in subordination you have two unequal parts which makes a complex sentence. • scDC, IC. • IC, sc DC.

  5. Because SUBORDINATING • Since CONJUNCTIONS • If • After • When • Until • Unless • While • As • Although • Even though • Once • Whenever • Before There are about 40 subordinating conjunctions; these are some of the most common ones

  6. If one of these words appears in a sentence, you are looking at a complex sentence. • Example: • Because the policeman was injured, the bandit escaped. • The bandit escaped because the policeman was injured. • Note:The curious thing about the complex sentence is that the order of the sentence may be reversed, and it still makes sense.

  7. However, subordinating conjunctions are used for specific reasons. • Reason • The pool was closed because the storm blew in fiercely.

  8. Condition • If you are not ready, we will not go.

  9. Condition • Unless you bring up your grades, you will be asked to drop the class.

  10. Reason • Since we are totally drenched, we really should take a warm bath.

  11. Time • When he arrived, the storm was just beginning. • While you ate your pizza, we were washing the dishes. • After you finish with the puzzle, please put it up. • Until he was finished, we did not leave. • Since the beginning of class, we have been writing sentences.
