  14. Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed Articles

  15. Why should you care about Peer-Review? Adapted from: http://library.mcmaster.ca/innis/find/academic.htm • Peer-Reviewed Articles are typically written by leading experts in the given field of research • These are the papers that help YOU become an expert. • Peer-Reviewed Articles are properly referenced (footnotes, endnotes &/or bibliography) and also cite other Peer-Reviewed Articles. • Your papers are expected to demonstrate the same qualities as published Peer-Reviewed Articles—Seek out publishing & conference opportunitiesas a student? • Peer-Reviewed Articles make a significant research contribution. • Your paper can also make significant contributions to research & the quality of the education received at UAB.

  16. The Ultimate Question: I found some sources, but are they good??? There are 3 partsto evaluating your sources • 1: Self-Evaluate Your Idea • What is the assignment asking you to do? • What do you hope to accomplish with your paper? • What do you want people to know after reading your paper?

  17. I found some sources, but are they good??? • 2: Evaluate the Article/Information You’ve Found • What journal published the study—is it peer reviewed? • Who are the authors—are they experts, do they have credentials? • Are the tables, charts and graphs meaningful—do they demonstrate relevant support of the topic? • Is the methodology logical—are there flaws in the study? • Does the author use valid references to support their claims? • Is the author biased to the point that their argument becomes unbalanced—do they acknowledge dissenting voices? • Ask yourself: is this the source I should use or is there a more reputable one? (Ex: About.com vs. WebMD vs. MedlinePlus)

  18. I found some sources, but are they good??? • 3: Evaluate Your Use of the Article • Does the article fit within the scope of the paper you are assigned to write? • Does the article provide support to your ideas? • Are you using the facts presented in the article in a purposeful way? • Are you using the article to speak for you, or are your own ideas shining through?
