  2. Study: Heavy Drinking More Prevalent With Military Men Than Civilians Posted: 9:55 PM Oct 27, 2010 A study shows heavy drinking is more prevalent among military men than in the general population. According to the National Institute of Health, young men in every service branch have higher rates of heavy drinking than their civilian counterparts. The study shows about 32-percent of young military men engaged in heavy drinking, compared with about 18-percent of civilian men.

  3. PREVALENT -- generally accepted; widespread. The trick-or-treaters this year were not prevalent, we only had 10-12 kids come to our door.

  5. FRAUDULENT -- Using deceit or trickery The company was using fraudulent names to hide illegal immigrants.

  6. VALOR -- heroic courage; bravery. The man who rescued the children was awarded for his valor.

  7. BENEVOLENT – adj. kind and good. Chuck was known for his benevolence; he gave generously to many charities.

  8. Guest essay: A looming clash between U.S., China? By Les Breuer Messenger Post Posted Aug 13, 2011 The term “sleeping with the enemy” has taken on new meaning as we are hugely indebted financially to this potential adversary. At the official level, the U.S. pretends to regard China in a benevolent way, much as an artist regards a major patron of the arts.Make no mistake, China’s government is not benevolent and certainly does not have the United States’ best interests at heart. China’s willingness to loan money comes with very strong strings attached, which, at present, appear as invisible wire but in the future will manifest as large threatening cables with slip knots at the ends from which to control us and eventually eliminate us from superpower status.

  9. PERPLEXING -- confusing; lacking clarity. The causes of the recession are perplexing which is why politicians can not agree on a solution.

  10. Read the fine print to verify what that pink ribbon means Just because someone or something sports a pink ribbon doesn’t necessarily ensure it’s associated with an organization that raises money for breast cancer research and treatment. Posted: October 23, 2010 To make sure a fundraising effort is reputable, Wall said, study a product’s label to be certain of the percentage or amount is being donated with the purchase of a product, and to whom. “Can you tell from the label? Is it enough?” she asked. Gogerty said the Komen organization agrees that this information is important. She said Komen requires donation partners to disclose their minimum guaranteed donation information on their packaging or with their program. So when a product claims to be donating to the organization, it is required to state in plain English how much is being given to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “There are a lot of packaged goods and programs that just say that they’re donating to 'breast cancer charities’ or 'breast cancer research,’ but never say which ones or how much. We want the public to know firsthand exactly how much this company is willing to commit to the fight against breast cancer,” Gogerty said.

  11. Verify -- verb To establish the accuracy of something Though instant replay verified the referee’s call, the rowdy Jets fans bombarded him with insults anyway.
