  2. The mantle is made out of ; • The Earth’s mantle is about 2,970 km thick, making up about 67% of the Earth’s total mass. You may think it’s a liquid, since volcanoes erupt the lava from the mantle. But actually, the magma is mostly solid rock. • If you could take apart the rocks in the mantle, and separate them into their atomic elements, you would have 44.8% oxygen, 21.5% silicon, and 22.8% magnesium. There’s also iron, aluminum, calcium, sodium, and potassium • The state of the material that is in the mantle, is mostly solid, or molten rock .

  3. Depth • The upper mantle goes down a depth of 410 kilometers. • The middle mantle goes down about 660 kilometers. • The lower mantle reaches a depth of 2,891 kilometers. • In all , the mantle is 2,970 kilometers thick. It makes up 67% of the earthstotal mass.

  4. The Temperature of the mantle ; • The temperature of the mantle varies by layer. As you go deeper into the earth, it gets hotter because its closer to the core. The outermost layer is about 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit . The innermost layer can reach about 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

  5. Mantles effects on the earth ; • When the convection currents move, they also move the tectonic plates , which cause earthquakes. Earthquakes can cause mass destruction of earth . • An earthquake is a sudden burst of energy in the earths mantle to create seismic waves.

  6. Who discovered the mantle? The mantle was discovered in 1909 by Andrija Mohorovicic , a Yugoslavian seismologist. Mohorovicic realized that the velocity of seismic waves is related to the density of the material that they are travelling through. He interpreted the acceleration at depth to be caused by a compositional change within the earth, with a much denser mantle being present beneath the crust.

  7. How did he discoover it? By studying earthquake waves. The waves moved at different speeds through the different layersThe speed of movement through the crust was much slower than through the mantle. This meant that the crust was less dense and had to be made of a different material than the mantle.

  8. The Layers Lithosphere is the layer closest to the earths crust. Asthenosphere is the next layer closest to the earths crust. Mesosphere is the inner most layer of the mantle than it goes to the core...
