  17. PRINCIPLE #8 • A witness know the difference between the _________ and ____________. Gospel Law

  18. Apathy CONCERN *THE MINISTRY OF THE LAW REVEALS THE WRATH AND JUDGMENT OF GOD UPON THE SINNER. LAW CRUSHES AND MAKES THE HEART READY TO RECEIVE THE PROMISES OF THE GOSPEL. LAW *WHERE THERE IS . . . *LAW MOVES THE HEART TO . . .

  19. SELF- SUFFICIENCY INSECURITY LAW *WHERE THERE IS . . . *LAW CREATES . . .

  20. COMPLACENCY A SENSE OF NEED LAW *WHERE THERE IS . . . *LAW CREATES . . .

  21. UNREPENTANCE SORROW LAW *WHERE THERE IS . . . *LAW CREATES . . .

  22. NO APPETITE HUNGER FOR THE GOSPEL LAW *WHERE THERE IS . . . *LAW CREATES . . .

  23. MINISTRY OF THE LAW APATHY CONCERN SELF- SUFFICIENCY INSECURITY LAW COMPLACENCY SENSE OF NEED UNREPENTANCE TO GODLY SORROW NO APPETITE HUNGER FOR THE GOSPEL

  24. GOD’S LAW OF LOVE Luke 10:25–11:13 *APPLYING THE LAW AT FULL STRENGTH REVEALS THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF FULFILLING ITS DEMANDS OUT OF A COMMITMENT TO DUTY AND FOR ONE’S OWN GOOD. * YET, THAT IS JUST WHAT THE LAW DEMANDS.

  25. And we know what Jesus said to the expert who had questioned Him. “You go, and do likewise.” The expert in the Law had come in pride, trying to trap Jesus. Now he went away, and we can hope he went away feeling a personal sense of need. For Jesus challenged this activist on his own field of honor:

  26. “Go and do.” You go, and try. And when you realize that you cannot possibly do all things that are required by the divine law of love, then perhaps you will realize that relationship with God can never be based on human works or accomplishments!

  27. GOD’S LAW LOVE OF LOVE First Table of the Law! *FROM THE CREATION OF THE WORLD, GOD’S UNCHANGEABLE WILL HAS BEEN THAT HUMAN BEINGS WOULD ORDER THEIR EXISTENCE, LOVING GOD WITH HEART, MIND AND SOUL, AND OTHERS AS THE SELF.

  28. Which is the greatest commandment in the Law? This question was being debated among the religious leaders at the time of Jesus and various commandments were being championed as the greatest. Jesus’ quick reply summarized the entire Decalogue. He replied that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord . . . God with all one’s heart . . . soul, and . . . mind(cf. Deut. 6:5).

  29. GOD’S LAW SPONTANEOUS, LOVE FREE, & JOYOUS OF LOVE *THE LOVE FOR WHICH GOD CREATED US IS ACCENTED BY ITS ATTRIBUTES - SPONTANEITY, FREEDOM, AND JOY.

  30. GOD’S LAW SPONTANEOUS, LOVE FREE & JOYOUS OF LOVE OTHERS *LOVE INVOLVES A BURDEN FOR AND DELIGHT IN THE OTHER’S WELFARE AND BENEFIT. THIS IS AGAPE, (SELF SACRIFICING LOVE) THE KIND OF LOVE THAT GOD IS AND HAS FOR US.

  31. LAW GOD’S LAW OF LOVE *PAUL TEACHES THAT THE LAW WAS ADDED BECAUSE OF SIN (Gal. 3:19). TO WHAT WAS IT ADDED? . . . The life of love never ignores the moral law! TO GOD’S UNCHANGEABLE WILL FOR HUMAN BEINGS - THE LIFE OF LOVE!

  32. LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW OF LOVE *NOTICE THE CHARACTER OF LAW AS LAW. LAW BINDS. IT PRESENTS OBLIGATION, AND THE PENALTY THAT FAILURE BRINGS IS DEATH AND SEPARATION FROM GOD.

  33. SELF LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW OF LOVE *ALL COMMITMENTS TO DUTY AND OBLIGATION, WITH THE THREAT OF GOD’S WRATH AND JUDGEMENT, ARE IN THE INTEREST OF BENEFIT FOR THE SELF.

  34. SELF LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW OF LOVE *THE MORE COMMITTED WE BECOME TO DOING OUR DUTY AS THE LAW DEMANDS, WITHOUT GRACE AS A MOTIVE THE FARTHER WE ARE FROM BEING ABLE TO LOVE AS GOD CREATED US TO LOVE.

  35. SELF LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW SPONTANEOUS, LOVE OTHERS FREE, & JOYOUS OF LOVE * IT IS THE LAW OF LOVE, BUT LOVE AND LAW REPEL ONE ANOTHER LIKE OIL AND WATER.

  36. SELF LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW SPONTANEOUS, LOVE OTHERS FREE, & JOYOUS OF LOVE * YOU CAN COMMIT TO DOING YOUR DUTY, AND YOU CAN STRIVE TO DO YOUR DUTY. BUT, YOU WORK FOR YOUR OWN WELFARE.

  37. SELF LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW SPONTANEOUS, LOVE OTHERS FREE, & JOYOUS OF LOVE *OR . . . YOU CAN ENGAGE IN FREE, SELFLESS LOVING OF GOD AND OTHERS. *BUT, YOU CANNOT DO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME! YOU CAN STRIVE TO DO YOUR DUTY (LAW PROPER), OR YOU CAN LOVE . . .

  38. SELF LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW SPONTANEOUS, LOVE OTHERS FREE, & JOYOUS OF LOVE *CHECKMATE! *THE MORE YOU COMMIT AND STRIVE TO DO YOUR DUTY AS THE LAW DEMANDS, THE MORE IMPOSSIBLE IT IS TO ACTUALLY LOVE.

  39. SELF LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW SPONTANEOUS, LOVE OTHERS FREE, & JOYOUS OF LOVE IN THE LIGHT OF THE CROSS/GOSPEL – THE LAW BECOMES OUR TEACHER. IT IS CALLED THE THIRD USE OF THE LAW

  40. YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, MIND, AND SOUL AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. SELF LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW SPONTANEOUS, LOVE OTHERS FREE, & JOYOUS OF LOVE *BUT THEN, THE PURPOSE THAT LAW (PROPER) WAS ADDED WAS TO REVEAL THAT WE AREN’T, WE DON’T, AND WE CAN’T. *AND WORKS OF LOVE FLOW FROM FAITH, NEVER FROM THE LAW.

  41. VI. The Third Function of the Law The Chief Question at Issue in This 1 The law has been given to men for three reasons: (1) to maintain external discipline against unruly and disobedient men, (2) to lead men to a knowledge of their sin,Tappert, T. G. 2000, c1959. The book of concord : The confessions of the evangelical Lutheran church (Formula: 1, VI, 1). Fortress Press: Philadelphia

  42. (3) after they are reborn, and although the flesh still inheres in them, to give them on that account a definite rule according to which they should pattern and regulate their entire life. It is concerning the third function of the law that a controversy has arisen among a few theologians. The question therefore is whether or not the law is to be urged upon reborn Christians. One party said Yes, the other says No.Tappert, T. G. 2000, c1959. The book of concord : The confessions of the evangelical Lutheran church (Formula: 1, VI, 1). Fortress Press: Philadelphia

  43. 54. Concerning the distinction between works of the law and fruits of the Spirit we believe, teach, and confess that works done according to the law are, and are called, works of the law as long as they are extorted from people only under the coercion of punishments and the threat of God’s wrath.6

  44. 5. Fruits of the Spirit, however, are those works which the Spirit of God, who dwells in the believers, works through the regenerated, and which the regenerated perform in so far as they are reborn and do them as spontaneously as if they knew of no command, threat, or reward.

  45. In this sense the children of God live in the law and walk according to the law of God. In his epistles St. Paul calls it the law of Christ and the law of the mind. Thus God’s children are “not under the law, but under grace” (Rom. 7:23; 8:1, 14).Tappert, T. G. 2000, c1959. The book of concord : The confessions of the evangelical Lutheran church (Formula: 1, VI, 5-6). Fortress Press: Philadelphia

  46. YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, MIND, AND SOUL AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. SELF LAW DUTY: YOU MUST DO IT OR DIE! GOD’S LAW SPONTANEOUS, LOVE OTHERS FREE, & JOYOUS OF LOVE

  47. MINISTRY OF THE GOSPEL *THERE IS BUT ONE MINISTRY OF THE GOSPEL, BUT THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT MODES... TWO DIFFERENT WAYS BY WHICH THE SERVANT OF THE WORD ADDRESSES HEARERS. FIRST, THERE IS...

  48. THE PROCLAIMED WORD MINISTRY OF THE GOSPEL *THIS IS THE PROPHETIC MODE OF SPEAKING, WHICH EMPLOYS THE FIRST PERSON SINGULAR “I” THAT ADDRESSES LISTENERS AS “YOU.”

  49. THE PROCLAIMED WORD THE TAUGHT WORD MINISTRY OF THE GOSPEL *AND SECONDLY, THERE IS... *THIS IS THE TEACHING OR INFORMATIONAL MODE OF COMMUNICATION. *THE TEACHING MODE PRESENTS INFORMATION ABOUT THE GOSPEL TO LISTENERS FOR THEIR UNDERSTANDING AND CONSIDERED JUDGMENT CONCERNING ITS VERACITY AND ITS VALUE.

  50. THE PROCLAIMED WORD THE TAUGHT WORD MINISTRY OF THE GOSPEL *FIRST, LET US EXAMINE SOME OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROCLAMATION MODE OF THE MINISTRY OF THE GOSPEL.
