3. Piedmont/Mountains • Piedmont—gently rolling land between ocean and mountains • Mountains—areas of very high land • Georgia—Blue Ridge Mountains Appalachian Mountains

4. Wetlands (aka swamps and marshes) • Wetlands—low land covered by water most of the year • Swamp—wetland where mostly trees and other woody plants grow—usually fresh water

5. Wetlands (cont) • Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp is the largest freshwater swamp in North America. • Marsh—wetland where mostly soft stemmed plants and grasses grow—usually salt water

6. Coastal/Ocean Habitats • Georgia’s coast and barrier islands are home to a lot of animals and plants. • Coast—where ocean meets land

7. Oceans (cont) • Barrier island—a sandy strip of land off shore that protects the mainland • These are pictures of Tybee Island, one of the closest barrier islands.

8. Oceans (cont) • Continental shelf—gently sloping land on the bottom of the ocean • Reef—A ridge of rock on ocean bottom—home to many creatures—sponges,coral • Dune—mound of sand formed by wind and water
