  2. Background Information Gandhi is most famous for teaching people his nonviolent ways of life. He was born October 2, 1869 in Porbander, India. He married Kasturba when he was only 13 and when she was only 10. They had 4 boys during their 62 years of marriage His family

  3. Education Gandhistudied law in London in 1888 when he was only 19 Many students were racist and in lonely hours he read about the principle of nonviolence and strongly agreed with it Gandhi went to South Africa to be a lawyer in 1893 but soon returned to India to address the problems India was facing Gandhi while he was working in South Africa

  4. Leading Protests Gandhi helped win India their independence by his many protests against the British These protests got Gandhi in jail 3 times One of his most famous protest was the salt tax protest where he led thousands on a 200 mile march to make their own salt His salt march

  5. Nonviolent Ways Gandhi believed in the teachings of Satyagraha which is non-violent ways of life Gandhi would teach villagers all about the ideas of Satyagraha Gandhi won Indian independence without hurting anyone Gandhi teaching villagers

  6. Gandhi’s Public Fasts Gandhi would constantly go on public fasts to punish himself for the breakdown of his country Gandhi usually went on public fasts to show others how he would get spiritual enlightenment Many people joined Gandhi in these fasts but never had as much determination and discipline as he did Gandhi praying

  7. India’s Independence The British took over India while they were there by putting heavy taxes on farmers and starting their English based school system in India’s schools Gandhi worked 50 years trying to win the freedom and rights for the Indians He fought with the British until they finally gave India their independence on August 15, 1947 Gandhi talking with political leaders

  8. His Assassination Gandhi was killed on his way to a praying on January 30, 1948. He was shot by Nathuram Godse, a religious fanatic who hated Gandhi’s views of life. Godse shot three bullets from his pistol into Gandhi’s chest Gandhi blessed his assassin when being shot by saying He Ram! He Ram! Which meant Oh God! Oh God! Nathuram Godse
