Pompeii was a bustling Roman town nearly 2000 years ago, until the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 24, A.D. 79. In a frantic bid for survival, the townspeople rushed out of their homes, only to be enveloped by smoke, fire, and falling ash. The volcano's eruption transformed day into night, as thick ash and poisonous gases consumed the air. Over the next 18 hours, this once-thriving community was completely buried, preserving a snapshot of Roman life and tragedy for centuries to come.
